I Tested the Top Artisan Type 99 Mousepad: My Honest Review and Collecting Tips

The Type 99 MID XL takes the top spot because its firm base offers an incredibly consistent surface that helps your mouse stop exactly where you intend. It provides a level of precision tracking that is difficult to find elsewhere, making it the primary choice for those who value absolute control during demanding tasks.

In my view, this is the most refined offering for users who want to eliminate any feeling of "floatiness" during subtle movements. The MID firmness ensures the pad stays flat, though the trade-off is a lack of the "cushion" feeling found in softer versions.

This pad is ideal for comfort focused users who spend long hours at their desk and want a surface that feels gentle on the wrist. The Soft base provides just enough give to make the contact point feel pleasant rather than harsh.

I find that the Matcha colorway adds a nice aesthetic touch to a setup, but the real star is how the foam absorbs minor variations in your desk surface. It balances the Type 99 friction with a forgiving feel that prevents fatigue during extended sessions.

An unexpected feature of this pad is its ability to maintain a remarkably uniform speed regardless of how much humidity is in the room. This consistency makes it a favorite for players who need their muscle memory to remain sharp across different environments.

I think this version is the sweet spot for those who worry about their surface changing over time. By pairing the MID base with the signature Matcha surface, you get a reliable tool that does not surprise you with erratic friction.

The most common complaint is that the Large size feels cramped for users who employ a low-sensitivity style, though it is perfectly fine for those with limited space. If your desk is a bit crowded, this compact footprint is actually a significant advantage rather than a limitation.

I see this as the perfect solution for minimal setups where every square inch counts. You lose some surface area, but you gain the Soft base comfort that makes the Type 99 series so pleasant to use.

When compared to the Type 99 Soft L, the Zero offers a more balanced hybrid performance that feels slightly faster. It does not have the same extreme stopping power as the Type 99, but it is much more versatile for general tasks.

I would point most people to the Zero if they aren't sure they need the intense control of the Type 99. It is a legendary surface for a reason, providing a predictable experience that works well across many different styles.
